ONCE CADE TOOK care of his e-mail, ordered more feed, and scheduled the farrier to come in and shoe four of the horses, he grabbed the bag of carrots Julian had thrust into his hands before he had made his escape.
He had to think, and he couldn’t do that with Julian’s gorgeous eyes distracting him. Nor could he think his quiet thoughts when Julian always happened by at one of those challenging times.
Times when Cade needed a helping hand, and was too stubborn to ask.
It seemed as though Julian used his high-tech wizardry to spy on him with cameras set up throughout the house, or something. Or read his mind – and that wasn’t creepy at all.
It was uncanny, the way Julian could be immersed in his work at the dining room table, eyes on the screen and ear phones playing the sounds of rainstorms and wind – and then, as though he’d gotten an invisible and urgent text, he would appear in the same room, and silently help Cade with whatever needed to be done.
Socks and shoes.
Making the bed.
Reaching for a book that was above his shoulder height - and yes, stretching up was a big no-no. He’d tried that once, and shifting his ribcage like that was as bad as activating all those little core muscles while he’d tried to open a jar of tomato sauce without popping the vacuum seal first.
Cade wanted to hate Julian, because Cade wasn’t one to accept help from others easily. He was fiercely independent. Buying this place against his parents’ protests served to prove how pig-headed he could be, even when presented with reason and facts.
Except he had a good feeling about it, he’d always wanted to own his stable and horses, and the extra land that came with it deferred the risk somewhat. He knew he could sell an acre or two if his situation became dire enough, but he tried not to think in that direction. The land was a long-term investment, and besides, he loved it.
He loved the small stand of woods that divided the pasture from the road, and he loved the stream that cut through it. He loved the almost-flat front yard with its stately horse chestnut trees, and he absolutely adored the orchard out back with all its apples and peaches and cherries.
And now a new student – Julian – was mucking out his stalls and fixing his dinners, and he’d even taken him out to lunch.
The lunch part had felt suspiciously like a date.
It had been a date.
And dropping to his knees just to blow Julian in the middle of the day had been a pleasure.
A week. It’d been a fucking week, and he was horny and frustrated, and Julian was there with his sweet manners and earnest helpfulness, and... dammit. He just could not work himself up to be angry with that man.
His student, Cade reminded himself. His student, who needed to learn to ride in order to overcome his fear of heights.
There had to be a way.
